COD Mobile Shadow Ban:
What It Is, Why It Happens & How to Fix It

Long matchmaking queues. 200ms ping. Lobbies full of obvious cheaters. If this is your experience, you may have been shadow banned — and you might not even know it yet.

You've done nothing wrong. No cheats. No hacks. No suspicious software. You just played your best game, racked up an impressive kill count — and suddenly matchmaking takes 10 minutes. Your ping is locked at 200ms. Every lobby feels off. You search online and land on this page. The verdict? You've probably been shadow banned. Welcome to one of the most frustrating — and least explained — features of Call of Duty's anti-cheat system.
7–14 Days a shadow ban typically lasts

01 What Exactly Is a Shadow Ban?

A shadow ban — officially called "Limited Matchmaking" by Activision — is a temporary restriction placed on your account when the RICOCHET anti-cheat system flags it as suspicious. Unlike a regular ban, you are not told about it. The game continues to work. You can still queue up. You can still play.

But here's the catch: instead of playing with the general player base, you are quietly moved into isolated lobbies filled with other flagged accounts — a mix of actual cheaters and other innocent players caught in the same net. Your matchmaking pool shrinks dramatically, which is why games take so long to find. Your ping spikes because the servers available to you are limited. And the lobbies you do land in feel unbalanced and strange, because they are.

Activision uses this period — typically 7 to 14 days — to monitor your gameplay and determine whether you are genuinely cheating or were flagged by mistake. If you're clean, the ban lifts automatically. If RICOCHET finds evidence of violations during that window, it escalates to a temporary or permanent suspension.

Think of a shadow ban as being put in a waiting room while the system decides your fate. You're not convicted. You're under investigation. The key difference is: legitimate players who keep playing normally tend to come out clean on the other side.

02 The Signs: Are You Actually Shadow Banned?

Because Activision never tells you directly, most players only figure it out by recognizing the symptoms. Here are the telltale signs to watch for:

01

Ping Locked at 200ms

If your ping suddenly spikes to exactly 200ms and stays there regardless of your actual connection speed, this is the most classic shadow ban indicator.

02

Matchmaking Takes Forever

10, 15, even 30+ minutes searching for a game during peak hours. Your matchmaking pool has shrunk to only flagged accounts.

03

Suspicious Lobbies

When you do get into a game, the lobby feels wrong — obvious aimbotters, teleporting players, or extremely laggy opponents.

04

Friends Can't Join You

Party invites start failing, or friends can't find your lobby. Your restricted status affects social features too.

05

"Under Review" on Activision Site

The most definitive confirmation. Checking the Activision ban appeal page shows your account status as "Under Review" rather than "No Ban Detected."

06

Disconnections on Launch

Some shadow banned players report being kicked from games immediately after connecting, or being unable to enter certain ranked playlists at all.

03 How to Check Your Status Right Now

Before assuming the worst, verify your account status. Here's the exact process:

1

Go to the Activision Support Page

Visit support.activision.com/ban-appeal in your browser. This is the official enforcement check page.

2

Log In With Your Account

Sign in using the same platform credentials you use to play — Activision ID, PlayStation, Xbox, or Steam login.

3

Accept and Continue

A pop-up will ask you to "Agree and Continue." Accept it to see your account's enforcement status.

4

Read Your Status

You'll see one of three results. "No Ban Detected" means you're clear. "Under Review" means you are shadow banned. "Permanently Banned" requires an appeal.

Status Message What It Means Duration Action
No Ban Detected Your account is clean and unrestricted No action needed
Under Review Shadow banned — in limited matchmaking 7–14 days Wait it out / Appeal
Temp Suspended Confirmed violation, temporary penalty 48hrs – 30 days File appeal
Permanently Banned Serious violation confirmed, lasting ban Indefinite Formal appeal required

04 Why Do Innocent Players Get Shadow Banned?

This is the part that frustrates the community the most. RICOCHET's detection system is automated and far from perfect. Legitimate players get caught in the net regularly — and understanding why helps you avoid it happening again.

Cause 01

Spam Reports From Other Players

This is the most common reason innocent players get shadow banned. If a group of players — or even a popular streamer with a large audience — repeatedly reports you, RICOCHET's system picks it up as a flag regardless of whether the reports are valid. Getting 23 kills in a match? Some players will report you out of frustration, not because you were cheating.

Cause 02

Playing Too Well — Statistically Unusual Performance

RICOCHET's machine learning analyzes gameplay for statistical anomalies. A legitimate player on a hot streak with an unusually high kill-death ratio, perfect accuracy, or reaction times that appear inhuman can trigger the behavioral analysis system — especially in ranked lobbies. This is frustrating but true: playing exceptionally can sometimes get you flagged.

Cause 03

Third-Party Software Running in the Background

Having software like Cheat Engine, memory scanners, game optimizers, or even some overlay tools running on the same device while playing can trigger RICOCHET's kernel-level driver. It doesn't matter if you weren't using them for COD — the driver flags any process that interacts with game memory. This catches a lot of innocent PC players by surprise.

Cause 04

VPN or Unusual Network Behavior

Connecting through a VPN during gameplay, or playing from a new location with a different IP, can look suspicious to automated systems. If your network profile suddenly changes, RICOCHET may flag it. This is why we recommend using a VPN carefully — it's great for protecting your connection, but some configurations can trigger a review.

Cause 05

Being on a Team With a Cheater

If you're in a squad and one teammate is cheating, the system can flag associated accounts too. You might not have known. But being detected in the same lobby repeatedly with flagged accounts raises your profile's risk score.

One of the most eye-opening realities: players have reported getting shadow banned simply for getting a high number of kills in ranked play — because it looks statistically suspicious even when completely legitimate. The system is automated and imperfect.

05 How to Fix It & Get Unshadow Banned

The hard truth first: there is no guaranteed fast fix. A shadow ban runs its course in 7 to 14 days and typically lifts automatically if no actual violations are found. But there are things you can do to give yourself the best shot at a clean outcome — and things you must absolutely avoid.

What you SHOULD do during a shadow ban:

  • Keep playing normally in the restricted lobbies — consistent, clean gameplay reinforces that you're not cheating
  • File a ban appeal at support.activision.com if you believe it's a mistake — a calm, professional message helps
  • Check your status page daily to track when "Under Review" changes back to "No Ban Detected"
  • Close any third-party overlays, optimizers, or background apps before launching COD
  • Enable 2FA on your Activision account to protect your account from being compromised
  • Make sure you're ranked up legitimately — our XP Cards guide shows proper ranking methods

What you should NEVER do during a shadow ban:

  • Create a new account to bypass the shadow ban — this can link back to the original ban and worsen it
  • Download or run any cheat software "just to see" — this turns a review into a permanent ban
  • Spam the Activision support team with multiple appeals — one clear, calm appeal is far more effective
  • Quit the game entirely during the review period — continued clean play actually helps your case
  • Assume it's a hardware ban and wipe your device — shadow bans are account-level, not device-level
If you create multiple accounts while under review, Activision's system can detect the hardware link and extend or escalate your restriction. Don't do it. Wait out the 7–14 days and play clean.

06 How to Avoid Getting Shadow Banned in the Future

Prevention is always better than cure. Here's how to keep your account clean and off RICOCHET's radar entirely:

1

Close All Background Apps Before Playing

Anything that could interact with game memory — game boosters, screen recorders with overlays, third-party macro apps — should be closed before launching COD Mobile. RICOCHET's kernel driver monitors all active processes.

2

Enable 2FA and Secure Your Account

A stolen or compromised account that gets used for cheating will result in a ban against YOUR account. Protect it. The Activision account security page makes 2FA setup quick and easy.

3

Don't Squad Up With Suspicious Players

Be cautious about who you team with in ranked. Playing repeatedly with flagged accounts raises your own risk profile. If a teammate is clearly cheating, leave the lobby and report them immediately rather than benefiting from their hacks.

4

Avoid Toxic In-Game Behavior

Mass reports from annoyed players are a major trigger for shadow bans. Avoid spamming voice chat, harassing players, or doing anything that encourages a coordinated mass report campaign against you.

5

Use a Trusted VPN Carefully

A VPN is excellent for protecting your IP and reducing lag — especially in Nigeria where server routing can be inconsistent. But configure it before launching the game, not mid-session, to avoid triggering network anomaly flags. Check our previous post on optimizing your COD Mobile setup for more on this.

6

Report Hackers — Every Time

The community report system directly feeds RICOCHET's machine learning model. Every legitimate report helps the system get better at distinguishing real cheaters from clean players like you. See our full guide on how hacking works in CODM to understand what you're reporting.

07 The Bigger Picture: Is RICOCHET Doing Its Job?

The COD community is divided on this. On one side, RICOCHET has issued over 180,000 bans in single waves, introduced kernel-level detection, integrated Microsoft Azure cloud attestation for Ranked Play, and deployed machine learning that reviews up to 1,000 gameplay clips per day. By most measures, it is one of the more sophisticated anti-cheat systems in mobile gaming.

On the other side, legitimate players getting shadow banned three, four, five times in a single season — with no warning and no explanation — is a genuine problem. Players who've never cheated a day in their life find themselves in restricted lobbies simply because they played too well, got spam reported, or had the wrong app running on their PC.

The shadow ban system, while well-intentioned, catches too many innocent players in its net. Until Activision improves the false-positive rate, the best defense is awareness. Know the signs, know how to check, know what to do — and keep playing clean. Your rank and your reputation are worth far more than any shortcut. Whether you're grinding to rank up with XP cards, hunting that Swarm killstreak, or perfecting your legendary loadout effects — the long game is always the right game.
